Photography: Portable Studio Lighting Setup…?

Hi. I would like to take one head and soft box or umbrella on location somewhere, let’s say the park, to shoot portraits. What’s the best way to do this, or is it possible to do this without an outlet? Are there portable battery packs for power packs and strobes? Any info you can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Both Canon and Nikon make flash units that can be “slaved” via a radio signal transmitted by the camera. I am only familiar with the Nikon SB-800 unit.

Using a D200 you can program up to three different groups of flash, each with about as many flash units that you can afford. These flash units use AA alkaline cells (4 or 5 depending upon your configuration).

My guess that a two-light, full studio kit that is battery powered will be quite expensive and hauling all those batteries around could become a real chore.

Using reflectors can do about the same thing for you when shooting outside. You just have to have a few assistants around to hold them while you shoot.
